Benjamin had been called to serve on an LDS Mission in England and while he was gone, Ellen, (his mother) was taken very ill. She had terrific pains in her stomach. They didn't have a doctor for her. They would make bags and fill them with salt and place them on her stomach like a polis or a plaster to try and relieve some of the pain that she was having. Time went on, but Ellen wasn't getting any better.
Ellen Bellion McCleery passed away at her home on April 3rd 1896 at 11:30 a.m. at the age of seventy three. It was said that she died of Dropsy. If they pushed their fingers on her body, it would leave big dents because she had filled up with water so badly, but there had to be something that was causing her to fill up with the water like she had done.
Dropsy: An old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water. In years gone by, a person might have been said to have dropsy. Today one would be more descriptive and specify the cause. Thus, the person might have edema due to congestive heart failure. Edema is often more prominent in the lower legs and feet toward the end of the day as a result of pooling of fluid from the upright position usually maintained during the day. Upon awakening from sleeping, people can have swelling around the eyes referred to as periorbital edema.
The funeral service for Ellen Bellion McCleery was held in the South Cottonwood LDS Ward Chapel on Vine Street in Murray, Utah. (While Arthur, Araina and I were living in Chase acres in Murray, this was where we went to church).
Ellen was laid to rest in the Cottonwood Cemetery. (Later, called the Murray Cemetery).
