LAST RITES HELD FOR C.J. PAYNE
Son of Pioneers Dies At Farm Home
Caleb J. Payne, pioneer resident of McMinnville, died at his home southwest of McMinnville Sunday afternoon at the age of 79. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Macy's chapel, and interment was in the family lot in the Bellevue cemetery.
Mr. Payne was born Dec. 21, 1858, of pioneer parents, Caleb and Malinda Tony Payne, on their donation land claim, where he has since resided. C.J. Payne, sr., crossed the plains to Oregon in 1845.
Mr. Payne was a graduate of Monmouth normal school and Portland business college in 1882. In 1885 he married Mary M. Raymond at McMinnville and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary three years ago. Mr. Payne has lived all of his life on his farm near Bellevue.
Surviving are his wife, Mary M. Payne; a son, Raymond M. Payne; and a daughter, Mrs. Rita Laws, all of Bellevue; a granddaughter, Donna Mae Payne, Seaside; and a sister, Mrs. W.L. Warren, McMinnville. A daughter Ethel died in 1901.
