John Taffe was president of the councilmen in the 8th session of the legislature in 1861. He served as a Major in the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry from October 1862 through December 1863. In 1864 a mounted militia was formed in Omaha and he was Captain of B Company He was elected to the U.S. Congress and served three terms although in ill health much of this time. He was founder of the Omaha Public Library and was one of the early editors of the Republican.
