Donald Eugene Hickey
Donald Eugene Hickey, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at the age of 82, surrounded by family and friends.
Don was born on July 16, 1928, to John and Dessie Hickey, on a farm just south of Malheur Butte.
He attended grade school in Arcadia. Then he chose to finish his education at Ontario High School, graduating from there in 1946. After graduation he stayed on the farm and took care of his parents.
In 1953, Don married, the love of his life, Reta Wright. In 1956, they had a son, William (Bill) Hickey — the light of Don's life. Three years later their daughter, Evelyn Hickey, was born. Don was delighted with her and their family was complete.
In the summer of 1956, Don started working on a farm in Adrian, Ore.
That fall he started working campaigns at the Nyssa Sugar Factory, where he put in 44 campaigns.
He worked many summers for Bruce Hunt and finally went out on his own spraying crops.
Don worked hard to support his family.
Don's favorite "hobby" was spending mornings sitting in the coffee shop talking to his friends.
Don was a member of the Boulevard Grange, Malheur County Historical Society and the Renters Association.
Don was preceded in death by his mother; father; two sisters; and a brother. Don's daughter; and son; also preceded him in death.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Reta; a nephew, Charles (Kay) Barnhart; three nieces, Robin, Judy and Carol Lee; and many cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Lienkaemper Chapel in Ontario, Ore.
Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chapel.
Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery.
