Marshall Blake Bates, 66, of Woodland, Alabama, died Wednesday, August 31, 2005, in his residence.

He was born February 12, 1939, the son of the late Offard and Myrtis (Heard) Bates. He was a member of Ava United Methodist Church, Wedowee, Ala. He owned and operated a trucking firm.

Survivors: Wife, Rae Duryee Bates of Woodland; daughters, Deborah Heckenberger of Northampton, Lisa Vanderbeck of Whitehall; son, Scott Bates of Villa Rica, Ga.; brothers, Wallace Bates of Monticello, Ala., John Bates of Longview, Wash.; five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Mark Heckenberger, and a brother, Harold Bates. Services: 1 p.m. today, September 3, 2005, Ava United Methodist Church, Wedowee, with Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
