Catherine Whitehead was born in the British colony of Virginia in America. She married Joseph Cobb IV, and they had six sons and one daughter. The colonies were in a state of unrest over taxes, lack of representation and abuse of British soldiers. Her spouse, Joseph, died in 1777, the year of the Declaration of Independence. At least one son, Lieut. William Cobb, and probably other sons fought in the Revolutionary War.
