Joseph Cobb IV, son of Joseoh Cobb III and Susannah Braswell, was born 1700 in Surry County, Virginia a British colony in America. He married Catherine Whitehead in 1730 and the lived in Southampton County, Virginia. His land descriptions are recorded in old land records of Southampton County. Joseoh and Catherine had seven known children. Their children grew up in the unrest of the colony over taxation, lack of representation and the heavy hand of the British military. Joseph died in 1777, the year of the Declaration of Independence. His son, Lieut. William Cobb fought in the Revolution War which followed. Son, Joseph Cobb, Jr., also served in the war as a Private. One or more of their other four sons may have also participared in the war for independence.
