Irvin graduated from Harlandale High School in 1943 with his favorite remembrance being of playing in the marching band. He worked in the U.S. Civil Service at Kelly Air Force Base starting at the age of 16. After taking military leave, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in the headquarters of General MacArthur in Japan. After separation from the Army with the rank of Technical Sergeant, Irvin attended Draughon's Business College, where he met his future wife, Amy. Upon graduation in 1948, he returned to his position at Kelly where he was employed until his retirement in 1976 as a Maintenance Financial and Analysis Officer. He then helped Amy open a flower shop, Amie's Flowers and Gifts, where he served as business manager until his second retirement in 1996. He and his wife, Amy were founding members of St. Luke Catholic Church in 1959.
Irvin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Irvin is survived by his five children; daughter, Sandra Brieger Musk; sons, John Brieger and wife Mary Lou Davies, Douglas Brieger and wife Sylvia Mistician, James Brieger and wife Nancy Grant, and Richard Brieger and wife Lisa White; and fifteen grandchildren; Aaron Brieger, Katharine Brieger Leysath and husband Clinton, Cristian Musk and wife Rebecca Glaser, Stephanie Brieger Howard and husband Lee, Alison Musk, Aubrey Brieger, Chad Brieger, Delani Brieger, Trevor Brieger, Tanner Brieger, Emma Brieger, Dalton Brieger, Grant Brieger, Kyle Brieger, and Mara Brieger.
