Caroline Paiva was born in the Azores, but not sure if she was born on Fayal or Sao Miguel. In 1881, her father, Jose Paiva, mother, Marguerida, left from Sao Miguel, Azores, by sailing ship, for the Kingdom of Hawaii to work as contract labor in the sugar plantation, Papaikou, Hawaii. In 1894, Caroline married Manuel Vieira Atanazio, a seaman who became a resident of Hawaii. They had a number of children. In 1918, they moved seven children and some grandchildren to California where Manuel and Caroline remained the rest of their lives. They were residents of San Leandro, CA. Manuel passed first, followed by Caroline in 1954. Caroline's father is buried near Papaikou, HI; her mother Marguerida moved to San Leandro and passed in the late 1920s. She was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery, Hayward, CA, but the marker is destroyed.
