Robert Foster Bradley, son of William Renwick Bradley and the former Miss Mary Margaret "May" Lyon, was born on the 27th of October 1905 in Abbeville, South Carolina. His parents were both from old well-known families in Abbeville. Robert was named for his parternal grandfather, Rev. Robert Foster Bradley, a minister in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church.

On Christmas Eve 1938, Robert married Miss Susan Tison, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. T. F. Tison of Savannah, Georgia.
