Was unable to walk due to fever in his legs at the age of about 6 yrs. Was offered a "ha penny" to sit on his father's knee and stretch his leg to the floor one at a time and for "such a princely sum" he did. This continued until he was able to walk again. He was accepted to march in the Mormon Battalion at the young age of 17 years and he marched the entire way to California and back.
