Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 17 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial is in Minneopa Cemetery. Visitation. is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Landkamer Johnson Boman Funeral home with a prayer service at 6:00; . Visitation resumes at the church, one hour before the funeral.
Viola Rose was born on May 18,1920 in Remsen, IA to John and Rosa (Faessler) Funfsinn. They moved to a farm near Rapidan where she grew up. She attended school in Rapidan through the 11 th grade but transferred to St. Peter High School so she could care for a woman who lived there. Vi graduated in 1939. She then studied at Mankato State Teachers College where she graduated. with a major in Physical: Education and Health, and a Minor in Social Studies. She began her teaching career in Blue Earth. On June 9, 1947 Viola married Donald Holbrook in Mankato. They had one I son, Don Jr. They built a home i in South Bend Township where, Vi, lived until 2004. Before 1959, Mrs. Holbrook taught at Franklin and Union elementary schools. After that, she' taught at Mankato State I University where she earned t her Master's degree, also in 1959. Vi earned her PhD at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in 1970. Part of I her first responsibilities at MSU was to coach the first Track and Field team and the 'i" Gymnastic team for women. She was part of the group of el women who were involved in the beginning of girl's and women's sports. Vi retired in 1972, after which she worked with first grade students, helping with reading and math. She volunteered 30 hours a week at the MRCI Thrift Shop and, when needed, at the Summit Center, including their student letter writing e program. She raised money for the Taylor Center and was responsible for having 'Ms. Brock's name added to the Brock-Otto Hall of Fame. Vi received the Good People/Jefferson award in recognition of her volunteer work. She was a member of the MSU Retired Faculty, Ream, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the American Assoc. of University Women. Vi served I on the boards of Blue Earth County Parks and Recreation, ; MRCI Thrift Shop and its EASE program, International Student Endowment Fund and . the MSU Endowment Fund. She enjoyed her friends and family, the out of doors, canoeing, camping, hunting, fishing, time at Connor's Point, the Boundary Waters, and wintering in Green Valley, AZ. Vi always had a garden and preserved the extra vegetables.
Viola Holbrook is survived by her son Donald of Lake Washington; sister Bernice L. Fortier (and Bill) of Cleveland; three grandsons: Barry Dreyer (and Vicki), and. Matthew and Jackson Holbrook; two great- . grandsons: Nathan and Michael Dreyer; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and two brothers.
