A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday for Max J. Kirsch of Mayfield Village, formerly of Brookfield. He passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, May 28, 2014, in Governor Village, Mayfield Village. He was 96 years old.

Mr. Kirsch was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Spangler, Pa., a son of Luke and Annie Lieb Kirsch.

Max served as a technician third grade with the 333rd Infantry Regiment in the 84th Division of the Army during World War II. His decorations and citations included a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon.

Mr. Kirsch was a hard worker, and following his return from the war, he would go on to found the Kirsch & Griffith Men's Clothing Store in downtown Sharon. He retired in 1979 after operating the store for nearly 30 years.

He was a member of the Brookfield Optimist Club. Max was an avid golfer and gardener and a loving grandfather.

His wife, the former Norma Jean Brownyard, whom he married Sept. 7, 1946, passed away Nov. 5, 2006.

Besides his wife, Mr. Kirsch was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Kirsch; a daughter, Virginia Kirsch; three sisters, Davota Ratchford and Martha and Elizabeth Kirsch; his brother, Paul Kirsch; and his son-in-law, Les Freeman.

Interment: With his family at St. Mary's Cemetery, Hermitage.
