Missouri Governor. Served two terms as Governor of Missouri from 1993 to 2000. He was on the campaign trail running for the United States Senate against John Ashcroft when his plane crashed about 25 miles south of St. Louis, killing him, his son Randy Carnahan (who was the pilot of the plane) and his top aide, Chris Stifford. He subsequently won the election posthumously, and his widow, Jean Carnahan, was appointed to serve out the term.
