John Burleson passed away peacefully at his daughter's home on May 27, 2014.
He was born in Gorman, Texas on February 16, 1934 to Dee Burleson and Doris Miears Burleson. He attended many different schools, graduating from Eastland High School in Eastland, Texas in 1951. He attended and graduated from Texas Tech University with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1956, winning the intramural football championship with the BSU Bums and earning the nickname "Crazy Legs Burleson". He enlisted in the Air Force and served on active duty for 3 years and 12 years in the Reserves, receiving his honorable discharge at the rank of Captain.
After the Air Force he worked for Halliburton Company as a Professional Engineer in Jacksboro, Texas, Las Vegas, Nevada and El Tigre, Venezuela. While in Venezuela, he enjoyed fishing and hunting on the rivers and in the jungles of South America. He then returned to his beloved Texas in 1969 and worked as an engineer for West Texas Utilities in Abilene Texas. After retiring from WTU, he started his own company, Burleson Engineering and was a licensed Land Surveyor.
While station with the Air Force at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, he met Donna Jean Tillotson during a Sunday school class. They were engaged 3 months later and 4 months later, married on April 27, 1957 in Waterloo, IA. They were married for nearly 53 years, until her death in 2010.
John was a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Cross Plains. He also served as the Sunday School Director for a period of time. He taught the young boys Sunday school class and was the Royal Ambassadors leader.
He was the Little League president and a Boy Scout leader during his time in Cross Plains, and in his later years, enjoyed traveling to New Mexico and Arizona to watch his grandchildren perform in sports and dance.
He and his wife moved to Lake Brownwood and enjoyed building a log home in 2004. After the death of his wife in 2010, he remained there until 2013. At that time, he moved in with his daughter in Abilene.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee and Doris Burleson, his brother, Don Burleson and his beloved wife, Donna Burleson.
He is survived by his children, Ruth and husband Ronnie Hutchins of Abilene, TX, Bill and wife, Tess Burleson of Phoenix, AZ ,Matt and wife, Susan Burleson of Mabank, TX and his sister-in-law, Colene and husband, Alan Sachanowski. He has 6 grandchildren, Clint Hutchins, Katharine Morris of Abilene, Kyle Hutchins of Fort Carson, CO, Jessi Ruiz of Phoenix, AZ, Amanda Burleson of Albuquerque, NM and Cole Burleson of Phoenix, AZ. He has 3 great-grandchildren, Coleson Hutchins and Kaiden Hutchins (yet to be born) of Abilene, TX and Aubree Nivison of Phoenix, AZ.
Visitation will be from 6 pm to 7 pm Saturday at the Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains. Services will be at 3 pm on Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Cross Plains with Rev. Ronnie White officiating.
He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife at the Cross Plains Cemetery.
