OBITUARY

Mrs Mary Anne Menlove

One of Southland's best known equestrian personalities, Mary Anne Menlove, died on Wednesday at her home in Centre Bush. She was aged 81.

Patron of the Southland Area of the New Zealand Horse Society, Mrs Menlove was also a life member of the Birchwood Hunt, the first woman honoured by the club.

Numerous tributes were paid to Mrs Menlove and her work, and more than 400 attended her funeral in Winton on Saturday.

A member of the McNamee family of Garston, Mrs Menlove was born and attended school there. She worked on the family farm before marrying Stanley George Menlove in 1938.

The couple farmed at Dipton from 1954, before settling on a smaller block of land at Centre Bush in 1976. Mr Menlove died in 1978.

Mrs Menlove was a member of the Garston branch of WDFF and was active in district activities.

A keen rider from her earliest days, Mrs Menlove rode at the numerous branch meetings of the Birchwood Hunt. It was an interest keenly shared with her husband.

"Mary would ride anybody's horse, even if it was only half broken in," a friend said.

Her riding skills were passed on to her family, who also won notice for their abilities.

Among her contemporaries in hunting circles were Milly Moylan, Peg Sweetman, Eileen Looney, Vincent and Jack Langford. She was also involved in administering the sport.

Mrs Menlove had a keen interest in racing and owned two gallopers, Ramanda and Trash.

Mrs Menlove took an active role in church activities in the parish of St Thomas Aquinas in Winton, Centre Bush and Dipton. As the parish priest Father David Johns said at the Requiem Mass on Saturday, Mrs Menlove rarely missed weekly Mass.

Another quality mentioned by several who knew her was her unfailing hospitality.

But above all else, Mrs Menlove put her family first.

All of them rode at the hunts with the eldest, Reg, being hunt master for a period.

Mrs Menlove is survived by her four children, Reg, Matt, Donna (Smith) and Margaret (Ridley), grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
