Helen E. Noterman, 93, of 411 Bergen Street, Adams, Minn. died peacefully at her home May 28, 2014.

She was born on June 25, 1920, to Fred and Julia (Smith) Gerber in rural Adams. She grew up on the farm and attended grades 1 to 8 at St John the Baptist Catholic School and the local school district in Johnsburg, Minn. She graduated in 1938 from Adams High School. She was employed at Woolworth's in Austin, Minn.and worked for room and board at a household in Austin until her marriage.

On Oct. 28, 1947, she married Arnold R. Noterman at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg. The couple raised their family on their farm south of Adams. Helen lived on the farm until 80 years of age. At that time she moved into the Victorian home she bought and restored in Adams.

Her Catholic faith played an important role in her life. Helen was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish and the Council of Catholic Women. Christmas and Easter along with other special days throughout the years were celebrated with delicious food as an expression of her love for others. During her life, she enjoyed going to auctions, refinishing furniture, sewing, cooking, canning and gardening both vegetables and beautiful flowers. For nearly 30 years, she enjoyed helping keep the cemetery grotto bright with flowers. Helen had many talents and interests and enjoyed working and keeping busy. She was the grandma with lemon drops, cookies, and freshly baked bread.

Survivors include her children, Jane (John) Merdan of Avon Minn., Teresa (Gary) Smith of Decorah, Iowa, Claire (Roger) Simon of Adams, Minn., Gary Noterman of Adams, Minn., Gene Noterman of Adams, Minn., Edward (Maureen) Noterman of Adams, Minn., Fredric Noterman of Taopi, Minn, and Daniel (Karen) Noterman of Adams, Minn; her grandchildren, Jennifer Merdan, Joseph (Tricia) Merdan, Sara (Matt) Janda, Eric (Erin) Merdan, Julianna (Jim) Geise, Sophia (Juan) Reyes, Vanessa Smith, Winston Smith, Ezra Smith, Katherine Noterman, Anna Noterman, Ella Noterman, Samuel Noterman, Rachel Simon, Matthew Simon, Marisa Simon, Luke Simon, Emma Simon, Isaac Noterman, Maria Noterman, Molly Noterman, William Noterman, and Grace Noterman; eight great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Margaret Armstrong of Alexandria Va., Mary Brumm of Stacyville, Iowa, Adrian (Elaine) Gerber of Adams, Minn., and Roger (Mary) Gerber of Adams Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; daughter, Julie Noterman; an infant son, Frederick Thomas; and sister, Evangeline Landherr.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Ruben Spinler officiating. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be a 3 p.m. Rosary on Sunday, June 1 at the Adams Funeral Home where friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. There will also be a visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Adams Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Merdan, Eric Merdan, Winston Smith, Ezra Smith, Matthew Simon, Luke Simon, Samuel Noterman, Isaac Noterman and William Noterman.
