ALAN BAIN: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Anchorage Daily News (AK) - Saturday, September 25, 2010
May 28, 1960 ~ Sept. 21, 2010
Lifelong Alaskan Alan Lee Bain, 50, died Sept. 21, 2010, in Homer.
Celebrations of life will be held in both Homer and Anchorage. The Homer memorial will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kharacters after a private burial. The Anchorage memorial will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Salvation Army's chapel at 2100 DeArmoun Road.
Pallbearers include Myron Farrell, Benjamin Neher, Patrick Neher, Jason Neher, Gary Porter and Richard Frost. Honorary pallbearers are Jarod Ward, Marty Prillhart and Michael Neher.
Mr. Bain was born May 28, 1960, in Petersburg to Roderick and Donelle Bain. Alan attended East Anchorage High School.
From a very young age, he pursued his passion for the sea and worked on the family driftnet boat, the Donelle B., in Bristol Bay. In 1998, he took over as skipper and ran the business until 2009. He made his home in Homer, where he used his gift for making others smile in his work as a local bartender.
"Alan was such a happy little boy, and loved to spread his joy with a ready joke or funny story," his family said.
"He took great pleasure in entertaining and cooking for friends and family. He adored little children, and they flocked to him wherever he went. The neighbors will miss his willingness to help fix bicycles or shovel snow. He loved Alaska and fishing, making it both his career and main hobby. In the end, he succumbed to his long struggle with the disease of alcoholism. We hope all will remember Alan the way he was before his suffering became so great."
Alan is survived by his parents, Roderick and Donelle Bain of Anchorage; his sisters, Ella Bain Eaton and Ann Bain Winegarden of Seattle and Donna Bain of Anchorage; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Roderick Bain; and brother, Roy Bain.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army's Clitheroe Center, 1015 E. Sixth Ave., Anchorage 99501.
