Resident of Los Altos
After a long fight with Alzheimer's disease Richard "Dick" Eckert passed away on May 25, 2014. He and his surviving wife of 56 years, Jean, were both born in Huntington, N.Y. and attended Huntington H.S., where they met. Dick attended Farmingdale State College (NY) before enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserve Aviation Cadet Program, earning his wings on May 2, 1957.
After their marriage in Huntington, Navy duty in San Diego and the Philippines followed. Dick then attended Rensselaer Poly. Inst. (RPI), Troy, N.Y. and the University of Southern Calif. earning his Master in Engineering. When hiring by the commercial airlines opened up, Dick chose flying for United Airlines until his mandatory retirement in 1994.
Meanwhile, the Eckert's adopted two sons, Steven and Peter (deceased) and moved to Los Altos in 1970. Dick loved antique cars, old battery –powered radios, tutoring kids and adults, and coaching both Little League and AYSO soccer. Dick also spent many hours as a docent at Hiller Aviation Museum.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tues. June 3, 10:30 am at St. Simon Church, 1860 Grant Rd. Los Altos. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.
