Robert Dean Jones, 91, of Corvallis died Thursday at Corvallis Manor of congestive heart failure, following a short illness.

The son of Robert Merle Jones and Jessie Opal (Barcus), he was born on the family farm, near Auxiliary School 25 in the Inavale community of Benton County.

He graduated from Corvallis High School in 1932, where he played baseball, and Oregon State University in 1938. His college degree was in agriculture science, and he was a member of the Alpha Zeta honor fraternity.

He served in the Army from 1940 to 1946 as a first lieutenant in the Combat Engineers, with extensive experience as a training officer. He worked briefly for the Soil Conservation Service in Salem and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Goldendale, Wash.

On June 6, 1947, he married Hilda Mildred Meius in San Anselmo, Calif. They settled in Corvallis, where he began a 50-year-plus career as a manager of Loren Smith Farms, and she joined the faculty at Oregon State University. He was honored by OSU in 1995 as a Diamond Pioneer for career achievement in agriculture.

He was an avid Beaver sports fan and contributor to the Beaver Athletic Scholarship Fund. He was a long-time member of the Corvallis First United Methodist Church and a Mason and Shriner. Other memberships included the Benton County Historical Society, the Linn-Benton Community College Foundation and the OSU Alumni Association.

Surviving are wife Hilda; son Gary Jones of Salem; daughter Kathleen “Kitty” Buchner of Albany, and grandson Austin Jones of Salem. Brothers Kenneth and Joseph preceded him in death.

A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Corvallis First United Methodist Church, 1165 N.W. Monroe Ave., with Deanna Self-Price officiating. Private burial will be at the family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery near Peoria in Linn County.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Robert Dean Jones Scholarship Endowment, Dept. of Crop Sciences, in care of The OSU Foundation, 850 S.W. 35th St., Corvallis, OR 97333.
