Andrew was the son of St Clair Kee "Sinclair" Summers (1799-1861) and Susanna Hammock (1807-1885). He married Marietta Lucinda Tilford in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa, on 2 Sep 1855, the Rev John W. Sleeper officiating. Had the following children:

At age 29, on August 11, 1862, he joined the Union army, and on Oct 15 enlisted in Co G, Iowa 34th Infantry Regiment. Mustered out on June 11, 1863, in St. Louis, MO.

His first wife died in 1869; he married Bertha Grove (1839-1900) on July 26, 1874, in Roane Co., WV and they lived in Harper, Roane, WV. They had two daughters:
