Brigadier General, Commanded 2000 soldiers of the 3rd Mississippi Regiment, which he organized for the Confederate States of America.
A Natchez banker and planter, he built a home called Dunleith in 1858 and lived there with his first wife and their 7 children until her death. He later remarried and moved to New York, where he and his second wife and their 9 children lived in Brooklyn until he died.
His wife shipped his body to Natchez for burial next to his first wife, where he occupied an unmarked grave for more than 103 years.
