After an enormous amount of research I believe this man is actually Thomas Raymond Belew who for some reason after the military changed his name to Kavanaugh. He was married March 09, 1911 in Marysville, CA. to Mattie Dixon and divorced by 1913. Mattie was an employee of TR's Aunt and Uncle, John and Ellen Martin Bird, in their rooming houses in Sacramento. He disappeared for a few years while Mattie was divorcing him. But it is suspected that he was in hiding in Sacramento.

He was married March 25, 1920 to Bernadette Mary Valdrini Beardsley (Bernadette Valdrini) in Los Angeles, CA. They were separated or divorced about 1935.
Thomas and Bernadette had three children. Joseph, Bertha and Angelina.

On his WWII registration he lists his contact person as his daughter Bertha May Merkle. His place of birth and date of birth are the same as Ray Belew. He enlisted in 1909 in the Marines.

His father was Frank Belew and his mother was Tennessee Dixie Martin. After the military he listed his father as "Frank" Kavanaugh and his mother was listed as Tennessee on all documents. Sometime around February of 1901, his mother was married to a Kavanaugh, who was actually William Francis Kavanaugh who died in 1902 and could not have been Raymonds father. By 1910 she is listed as a widow and is working for her sister Ellen Bird managing one of her boarding houses in Sacramento and in 1912, and 1913 Thomas Raymond Kvanaugh is living with a lady named Mattie E. Kavanaugh in a boarding house owned by his Aunt Ellen Bird.

By January 1920 Census he is living with his mother Tennessee and her 4th husband Joseph Corrigan (his mothers maiden name). Josephs real surname name was Grogan and they lived in Los Angeles. Raymond is listed as 29 years old and married. By March 25, 1920 he marries Bernadette Margaret Valdrini, daughter of Joseph Valdrini and Emma Doria. Bernadette is 19 and it is a first marriage for her. Thomas Raymond Kavanaugh is 29, divorced and is a Railroad Conductor for the Pacific Electric Railway Co. Tennessee (Belew) Corrigan is a witness on their marriage license.

By 1930 Thomas Raymond and his family are living next door to his mother and her 4th husband Joseph Corrigan/Grogan in Los Angeles and it appears that Joseph and Thomas are working together at a dairy. Living on the other side of the Corrigans is a Kavanaugh family by the name of James Francis Kavanaugh and his wife May Emily and their children. I have been unable to connect the James Francis Kavanaugh family to William Francis Kavanagh.
