Ira Hale Buffum, 75 years old, 904 Seventeenth street, veteran real estate man and member of a pioneer family of Rock Island county, died shortly before 2 o'clock this morning at St. Anthony's hospital, following an illness of several weeks. A member of the firm of Eckhart & Buffum, realtors, his partner being James B. Eckhart. Mr. Buffum was active for many years in the affairs of the Rock Island real estate board. He had served as vice president of the board and as a member of important committees. His knowledge of real estate values was responsible for his being placed upon the committee of appraisals, of which he was often the chairman. He helped to organize the board and was present at its first meeting on June 18, 1917.
Mr. Buffum was born in Andalusia, Rock Island County, June 6, 1856. He was the third son of John and Sara Raymer Buffum, and was the grandson of Jonathan and Sarah Buffum who came to Rock Island in 1835, and of Sampson Raymer, who settled in Edgington township in the early 40's. Attending the Andalusia schools, he was married to Anna Hayes on May 5, 1885. Of this union, three children were born, Glen, who died in 1908; Clyde, who resides at 2237 Twenty-sixth street, Rock Island, and Vera, who was married to Sidney F. Steenburgh and who resides at 1211 Sixteenth street.
Mr. Buffum was in the lumber business for several years at Andalusia, but in 1902 he removed to Rock Island, and formed a partnership with James B. Eckhart in the real estate business, a connection which lasted until his death. In Andalusia he affiliated with the Masonic fraternity and for several years was the worshipful master of Andalusia lodge. On his removal to Rock Island he transferred his membership to Rock Island lodge, No. 658, Masons, of which he was an affiliated past master. His grandfather, Jonathan Buffum, built the old Farnham house on Third avenue across from the courthouse and was the proprietor and landlord of that ancient hostelry for some time.
Of late years Mr. Buffum became interested in the Memorial Park association and held the post of vice president in that organization. He had much to do with the landscaping and beautification of Memorial Park cemetery and devoted much time during the last two or three years of his life to his work.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by his son, Clyde, his daughter, Mrs. Sidney F. Steenburgh, his brother Frank of Forest Grove, Ore., his cousin, Almon A. Buffum of 1224 Fourteenth-and-a-half street, Rock Island, and by six grandchildren, Barbara and Jean Buffum and Clyde Raymer Buffum Jr., and Elaine, Robert and Marilyn Steenburgh. Mr. Buffum was the second cousin of the late Este Buffum, a former managing editor of The Argus.
The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Knox mortuary chapel, Rev. Edward Williams, pastor of the Broadway Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Father: John Buffum - born Feb. 5, 1825 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio-August 8, 1900
(Aged 75 he passed away at Lake Park, Iowa. The deceased was one of the pioneers of Rock Island County. He was a native of Ohio, coming to Illinois in 1826 and from that time has been a continuous resident of that state. John Buffum, in 1850, was married to Miss Sarah M. Raymer, and he then took up his residence on the farm which his father had in the meantime bought near Andalusia.)

RI Argus - Tuesday - August 14, 1900
John Buffum was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, Feb. 5, 1825. The following year he moved with his parents to Fulton county, Ill., where they lived until he was 11 years old, when they moved to Rock Island, where his father (Jonathan Buffum) conducted the first hotel of the city, the American house, which stood on the south side of Third avenue across from the old court house. They lived in the city about five years. They then removed to Andalusia township and settled upon the farm where he lived for nearly 50 years. On Dec. 12, 1850, Mr. Buffum was married to Miss Sarah Raymer, of Edgington township. Of this union there were born seven sons, five of whom, Rennah W., John Milton, Ira H., Sampson R. and Frank, with their mother survive. Being one of the earliest settlers of the county and an active business man, not only farming on a large scale, but for many years in the lumber and grain business, which kept him close to the rapidly growing population, for many years he enjoyed the pleasure of an acquaintance of nearly every man, woman and child in the county, and every one who knew John Buffum was a friend. He held many offices of honor and trust in this county. He was one of the first trustees of the Andalusia Methodist church, was treasurer of the Andalusia township school fund for over thirty years, was a member of the county board of supervisors 13 terms and chairman of that body three different times. In 1887 he moved to northwestern Iowa and located at Lake Park, where he lived up to the time of his death, which came when he was seemingly in the best of health and at his post of duty. He being city weighmaster, had just weighed a load of grain, put down the weights and laid his pencil and spectacles on the desk. When the wagon returned he sat there in the chair, but he had weighed his last load.
(Jonathan Buffum, came to Fulton county in 1826 and was connected with the stirring events about the time of the Black Hawk war. He established a grist and saw mill in Warren county, the first in this section of the state. In 1836 he came to what is now Rock Island and started its first hotel, the "American house," which was located just south of the present court house. Five years later he settled in Andalusia township.
He was a well-to-do farmer and representative citizen, and during his long residence in this county bore the respect and good will of all who knew him.
