Judge Morris was born on a farm called "Morris's Pleasure" near Greenwood Delaware on April 9 1878.
The land had been granted to his ancestor, Daniel Morris in 1740 and continued to be home to all of his descendants until the last one died, May Morris, Hugh's sister who had never married, in 1967. At that time, it was left to the University of Delaware, who still owns it.
Judge Morris was one of four children, and the only one who married.
On October 10, 1908 he married Emma Carter Smith, also of colonial Sussex County ancestry. They had l daughter, Mary Smith Morris,( born 1912 died in 1964) who never married. His wife Emma Carter Smith Morris died in 1950.
APPOINTED TO THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT OF DELAWARE BY WOODROW WILSON IN 1918 and took office on March 1 1919 one month before his 41st birthday. He resigned in 1930 after ll years.
