Obituary for Matthew A. Sutton
Sutton, Matthew Albert Matthew Albert Sutton passed away peacefully on November 13th at Reflections Care Suites in Northfield, Minnesota. He was born in Austin, Minnesota on April 28th, 1923 to George and Alta (Fisch) Sutton. He attended Annunciation Grade School and Washburn High School in Minneapolis, where he excelled in academics and sports and made many lifelong friends. Matt continued in this vein as he went on to the University of Minnesota, where he played varsity basketball and football for the Gophers and graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering. While there, he met the love of his life, Jeanne Kastner, on a blind date, and he knew immediately that she would be his bride. They were wed on October 19, 1946, and celebrated 66 years of marriage. Matt served his country in the United States Navy during World War II flying naval transport and as Athletic Director on Guam. Subsequent to his return and marriage to Jeanne, the couple moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he worked for McDonnell Douglas before accepting a request to teach and pursue his PhD in aeronautical engineering at Ohio State University. Upon completion of his degree, Matt joined Honeywell in Minneapolis, and the couple moved to Edina, where they raised their family and remained throughout his career in avionics, space, and defense. Matt retired in 1988 as Executive Vice President, and proceeded to enjoy his many passions, including golf, their home in Rio Verde, Arizona, travel, volunteer activity, and time with his beloved wife, family, and friends. Matt will be remembered not only for his achievements, but most importantly as a humble man of faith, a lifelong thinker and learner who loved engaging with all whom he met, for his love of adventure and sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his brother, George and sister, Carol. In addition to his wife, Jeanne, he will be missed by his brother, David (Mary Lee) Sutton, children Tom (Tina) Sutton of Lilydale, Minnesota, Nancy Sutton of Burnsville, Minnesota, Barbara (Dave) Weddel of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Ann (Jim) Gosack of Northfield, Minnesota, 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and many friends. Special thanks to the teams at Reflections Care Suites and Mayo Hospice for their loving care. Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 19 from 4-7 PM at Washburn- McReavy Edina Chapel, West 50th St. and Vernon Ave. at Hwy 100, Edina. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 5051 Eden Ave S., Edina on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 11 AM, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.
