Bert C. Arnold, Sr., secretary-treasurer of Litchfield Grocer Co. since 1930, died this morning at 10:35 o'clock in St. Francis hospital where he had been a patient since last April 5. He would have been 73 years old next Nov. 9.
He was born in Montgomery county and moved here in 1911 when he purchased a half interest in Litchfield Bottling works from Louis Hauser. In early 1916, he sold his interest in the bottling works and worked as a salesman at the grocery company.
He was a member of B.P.O. Elks lodge here for 49 years, serving as exalted ruler immediately after completion of the new building in 1923.
He had also been active in the Masonic lodge, a past master of Charter Oak lodge and Past Commander of St. Omar Commandery. He was a former member and president of the old Litchfield high school board, serving for six years.
In addition, he was a past president of the Litchfield chamber of commerce and served as chairman of the board of directors, member of the Rotary club and past worthy patron of Lavonne chapter of order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Antlers club, Shriner's lodge, past president of Litchfield Civic Pride Assn., past president of the park board, First Presbyterian church, serving as trustee, and the Men's club of the church.
He was graduated from Sorento high school and attended Valpapaiso university, Valparaiso, Ind.
Mrs. Arnold, the former Miss Adala Hauser, daughter of the late Louis and Anna W. Hauser, whom he married Nov. 12, 1911, died last Nov. 6 as they prepared to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. Virginia DrIskell and Bert Arnold, Jr., both of Litchfield, and Mrs. Marian Yaeger, Prescott, Ariz. A son, Maynard, died in April 1934 at the age of 19.
A brother Richard, Mason City and five grandchildren also survive.
The body was taken to Ross funeral home where services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Robert Holler, pastor of First Presbyterian church, officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
The family requests memorials to the building fund of the church in lieu of flowers.
