Verna Uhrenholdt was born in Clearwater, Nebraska on October 9th, 1910 to Emmanuel and Julia Uhrenholdt. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Denmark in 1910 and bought a farm in Nebraska.

Verna was the oldest child in a family of four daughters and two sons. She was pretty with lots of blonde curls. As she grew older she was always a "can do" youngster – naturally she became second-mother as the younger children arrived. She learned mechanics in order to know when the equipment needed repair. When she was a teenager she re-built a Ford Model T and painted it bright yellow.

Verna started school at age five and went through the eighth grade in the local one-room school house. After basic school she worked the farm for two years then went to high school in Lincoln, Nebraska. She became very independent.

After high school Verna attended the University of Nebraska Agricultural College in Lincoln and learned how to be a farmer, but after she met and married her husband, George Hoffman, a professional baker, she traveled the East coast hotel circuit with him. They eventually settled down in Detroit during WWII where their daughter, Joan, was born in 1944. Verna was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and her husband George as a Mason.

In the mid-1950s George had an opportunity to buy his own bakery and the family moved to Denver, Colorado. They sold the business in the mid 1960's and George was offered a good position in Houston, Texas as Superintendent of the main bakery for the Weingarten's Grocery chain. George supervised the central bakery and Verna managed a Golden Needle fabric store. They saved every dollar they could for retirement.

Verna and George eventually retired in the 1970s and bought a townhouse near their daughter's house. Verna enjoyed spending time with her daughter and grandson.

Verna died on July 10th, 1985 in Houston, Texas. Her cremains are buried with George in her son-in-laws family plot in Richmond, Texas.
