George Hoffman was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 1st, 1908 and was adopted by William and Valesta Zink, a middle-aged couple who had no children of their own. They named their baby George Nelson Zink.

George's adopted father died in 1915 and his mother moved with George to Canon City, Colorado where George took up the trade of baking. He was a bakers apprentice in local shops, but by his 20's he developed his own recipes and became a professional baker. After his mother died in the mid 1930's George changed his name to Hoffman for professional reasons and also about this time he met Verna Uhrenholdt, originally from Nebraska. They married in 1940 in Miami, Florida and lived in that city for several years. In between jobs in Miami they traveled the East coast "borscht belt" hotel circuit in the Catskills and back down to Miami with George working as a contract pastry chef and Verna as a hostess.

When WWII came the demand for luxury baked goods in hotels was way down and George and Verna moved to Detroit where he worked in the Indian Village Bakery, however George soon joined the war effort as an inspector in a war materials factory. In 1944 he and Verna had a daughter Joan and they moved to Grosse Pointe Woods north of Detroit near his sister-in-law June Uhrenholdt. After the war George went back to baking and in 1955 bought a bakery in Denver, Colorado, naming it Goodies. In Denver George was a Mason and member the Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Colorado.

In the mid-1960s George had to sell the bakery when his customers moved away. George and family moved to Houston, Texas when he was offered a position as Supervisor of the Central Bakery for the Weingarten's Grocery chain. By the mid 1970's he and Verna retired and bought a home near his daughter and her family.

In 1985 George's beloved wife Verna died and he lived alone. By the 1990's' George's health was not good and his daughter, Joan, looked after him. George died on February 28th, 1997 in Houston, Texas after a long illness. His cremains are buried with his wife Verna in his son-in-laws family plot in Richmond, Texas.
