Mitchell Louis Reed, 82 of Kennewick, passed away peacefully December 11, 2013. Mitch was born February 17, 1931 in Orange, Texas to Mitchell and Lena Reed.

Mitch was a lifetime active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was often affectionately referred to as a "scriptorian" for his extensive knowledge of the scriptures. In his early twenties, Mitch served on a mission for the church in the state of Washington.

Mitch attended Brigham Young University in Utah, where he earned a Master's Degree in English Literature. He worked as a high school teacher for a short time, but he spent most of his working life as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1992.

Mitch is also a veteran of the United States Army. He was drafted during the Korean War and served his time in Germany. He later told his family that he had worked in demolitions.

Mitch eventually settled down in Kennewick, Washington where he and his wife raised three children. After divorcing in 1997, Mitch spent the remainder of his life engaging in various activities which he enjoyed. He went to Texas for a year and lived with his sister, Evelyn. He visited the temple as often as possible, spent time with his dear LDS friend, Dennis Stringer, and served in a number of church positions. Later, when he wasn't getting out as much, he read extensively. Mitch had recently discovered the western novels of author L'Amour, and it became difficult to keep him stocked in books that he had not read. He also liked playing card games and dominoes.

Mitch is survived by his three children: Raymond Reed of Portland, OR; Paula Helten of Bellevue, WA; Charles Reed of Kennewick, WA; and their spouses and significant other. Two grandchildren: Kaylie Helten and Samuel Reed; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
