Jabez Whitaker is the second son and youngest of the three children of Dr. William Whitaker, an Anglican Minister, and Joan Taylor Whitaker. His father died the year Jabez was born and he and his siblings were raised by their mother and extended family. He received the typical education afforded English boys at that time. When Jabez reached maturity, he entered British military service and married the Lady Mary Bourchner. When his company was assigned to military duty in the American Colonies, he and Mary made their home among other English colonists in the colony of Virginia. Their son, William, was born there in 1617. Jabez died in 1626 at about thirty-one years of age.
Note: Recent researchers have discovered records in the Island of Barbados indicating a Jabez Whitaker was in the Island as late as the early 1650's. That individual may well be this Capt. Jabez Whitaker which would mean he lived to an older age.
