Christopher H. Carli, proprietor of the Stillwater limestone quarry, is a native of Stillwater, born July 5, 1855, the sixth child of Dr. Christopher and Lydia Ann (Brown) Carli. Christopher acquired the rudiments of an education in the public schools of Stillwater, Faribault and Hinckley Institution, Hudson, Wis. He studied civil engineering with Myron Shepard, 1869-1870, and then engaged in the photograph business several years, also the drug trade in Stillwater and Dakota for some time. In 1887 he engaged in the business with the Stillwater limestone quarry for the city, where he has since operated very successfully, furnishing miles of curbing and gutter work, concrete for the foundation for the new postoffice building and the prison walls for the Minnesota state penitentiary in 1889-1892.
Mr. Carli has been an active Democrat and has served as alderman of the third ward. He is a member of I. O. O. F., the B. P. O. E. and Eagles, and has filled the chairs in several lodges. He was married the first time to Lucy J. Brown, of New Richmond, Wis., daughter of the late John W. Brown. She died in 1885. One child was the fruit of this marriage--Edison G. His second wife was Mattie May Brown, daughter of L. Brown of New Richmond, Wis.
