James W. Southern, age 75, of Jefferson City, Missouri passed away on Friday, September 16, 2014 at Landmark Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Jim was born September 19, 1938, in Madison, Missouri, the son of Earl R. and Lillie B. (Crosswhite) Southern. He was married January 3, 1981, in Jefferson City, Missouri to Barbara J. (Schmidt) Southern who survives his passing..

Jim was a lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, he graduated from Madison High School Madison, Missouri. He was employed for seventeen years as the Director of campus mail service at University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri prior to his retirement in 2004. Previously he was employed with the Missouri Department of Revenue. He was a member of First Christian CHurch in Madison, Missouri and the Masonic Lodge in Paris, Missouri.

Survivors include his wife of thirty-three years, Barbara; son, David W. SOuthern (Sherry) of Hazard, Kentucky; two daughters, Julie A. Cooper (Gary) of Ogden, Illinois and Kimberlee K. McAlister (Kelly) of Coon Rapid, Iowa; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild and one step-great-grandchild.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, E. Richard Southern and one half-sister, Darlene Strawser.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00pm-7:00pm, Monday, May 19, 2014 with a Masonic Service to be conducted at 3:30pm in the Freeman Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, May 20, 2019 in the Freeman Chapel with Reverend Donald Carter officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.
