C.E. Hubert, born Ignatz Hubrich, came to the U.S. sometime before 1870 and worked as a "saddler," that is, a saddle and harness maker. Settling in Jackson Co. in North Alabama initially, he married Frances Emeline Johnson and they began a family. They moved first to NW Georgia, then to Benton, Tenn. (east of Chattanooga), finally settling in Athens, Ga. Eventually they had 10 children.
