Dr. Lawrence Joseph Hendricks
Aug. 29, 1919- May 18, 2014
Resident of Campbell
Lawrence Joseph Hendricks was released from this life on Sunday May 18th. Dr. Hendricks was born in Springfield, Illinois to Joseph and Frances Hendricks. After graduating high school he pursued an academic career attending Western State College at Gunnison, University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Missouri to obtain his Masters and PhD in Biological Sciences. He and his wife Ann settled in San Jose to raise their family and he spent the next 35 years as a dedicated professor at San Jose State University. He was a member of many organizations related to his love of the outdoors and especially fishing, his passion for many years. He was a master gardener, proudly growing beautiful vegetables until late in life. A lifelong enthusiast of playing the harmonica, Dr. Hendricks loved a good sing along. He greeted everyone with a friendly "How do", enjoyed the company of others and especially a brisk political conversation. He never tired of learning and read voraciously until the end of his life. His zest for life and genuine love of his family and friends will be greatly missed. He is survived by his ex-wife, Ann Reynolds Hendricks, daughters Nellie Heiman (Karl), Sally Herrera (Will), seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, brother-in-law Russell Loew and many nieces and nephews whom he loved staying in touch with. His family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley and especially the devoted and loving caregivers of Rochely's Care home for their care in his last months. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

A memorial celebration was held on June 22, 2014 at De Lavega park in Santa Cruz with a picnic for friends and family. Following the picnic the ashes were scattered at sea to the tune of his favorite songs, accompanied by a shower of flowers and the following read by grandson Paul; "Cherished son, devoted father, proud grandpa and great grandpa, emeritus professor. Your love of life and the great outdoors inspired us all and will live on in our quest for natural beauty, rare birds and big fish. Hoping you are fly-fishing on your favorite river, surrounded by towering redwoods, under a big blue sky. You will be forever missed."
