She was a native of Swain County, NC and lifelong resident of the Big Cove Community in Cherokee. She attended Big Cove Baptist Church and was a 2002 graduate of Cherokee High School. Despite her illness she lived her life to the fullest extent possible, and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. In 2002 the Ginger Lynn Welch Complex was named in her honor. During the dedication ceremony the scripture read was II Timothy, Chapter 4, verse 7, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. This exemplifies the way Ginger lived her life.

Surviving are her devoted, warm, caring, loving parents, Jesse James and Frances Davis Welch, of the home; brother, Jess Welch, Jr. of Cherokee, NC; five aunts, Mattie Wildcatt, Freda Ann Panther, Sharon Panther, Lawanda Jackson and Beatrice Standingdeer, all of Cherokee, NC; eight uncles, James Welch, Davis Welch, Joe Welch, Charles Welch, Abraham Welch, Thomas Welch, Mickey Welch and Charles Davis, all of Cherokee, NC; several cousins also survive.
