On 4 May 1820, he married Susannah Jackson of Chesterfield County, SC. They had 12 children, six sons -- John Sebrey, Joseph Jackson, James Clother (or Clothier), Jessie Edward, William Meadow and Tristram Thomas -- and six daughters -- Elizabeth Thomas, Sarah Jane, Mary Joanna, Susan Hollendsworth, Eliza Delilah, and Lucy Emma.
The six sons of Joseph Thomas Burch, as well as two of his grandsons, served in the Confederate Cavalry in the Civil War. All eight survived the war. Being too old to serve in the army, he supported the Confederate cause through the purchase of Confederate bonds. Certificates for $900 worth of bonds is extant and there were possibly others, as well.
In the 1860 census, Joseph Thomas Burch listed the value of his real estate as $10,000 and the value of his personal estate as $23,135. According to family tradition, he was captured by Gen William T Sherman and his property was burned and destroyed on Sherman's march through SC.
Joseph Thomas Burch died on 1 Sep 1868 in Mt Croghan, SC and is buried in the Burch Family Cemetery in Maysville, SC. His name is included on a memorial marker in the cemetery at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Mt Croghan. The marker commemorates those buried in the Burch Family Cemetery.
