He was born in Essex County, NJ, where his father was a hotel keeper.  He was orphaned at the age of 11, worked in a grocery store, and in 1867, at the age of 14, he went to Lenawee Couny, MI, where several of his father's siblings had moved.  He taught school in Canandaigua, MI, and Fayette, OH, for several years.  He was the editor of the "Bad Axe Democrat" in Bad Axe, MI, from 1884 to 1892, then moved his family to Klickitat County, WA, and then on to The Dalles, OR, where he raised both beef and dairy cattle.  He was very involved in civic affairs in The Dalles, twice running for mayor, and serving on the school board and the water commission.
