Jacob Thornton was born in Missouri. He is the son of John and Catherine House Thornton who resided in Washington County Missouri. Jacob was married on 1 August, 1851, at Lincoln County, Missouri to Celia J. Brunk, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Highbaugh Brunk. Jacob and Celia had 5 children the first two of whom were female and died as infants in Missouri. The other children, also born in Missouri are Helen Euphemia (Ella), Josephine and John Edmund. Celia Brunk Thornton died in Missouri ca 1872. Sometime around 1900, the family migrated to the west, eventually settling in Boise, Idaho by 1900. At the time of his death, Jacob was living with his daughter, Josephine Stewart Townsend in Pocatello. The obituary follows:

"Double Funeral-The funeral of Jacob Thornton will be held at 10 o"clock Tuesday. Following the death of Mr. Thornton, his grandson, Walter T. Stewart, died, the death occurring just thirty nine hours after that of the grandfather, in the same home, 905 South Harrison. The younger man was 33 years of age and for some time had been suffering from diabetes. Both funerals will be held Tuesday morning at the same time, from the Crawford & Schumacher undertaking parlors and the bodies will be interred side by side in the family plot at Mountain View."
