Harold Everett Coonrod was born on November 20, 1919 in Mahaska, Kansas to Harley Hammond and Beulah Emmaline(Summers) Coonrod and passed away on January 15, 2014 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 26 days. Harold attended grade and high school in Mahaska, graduating in 1937 and from Hebron Junior College in 1939.
In 1941 he moved to Wichita, Kansas where he worked at Beech Aircraft. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1942, serving with the 9th Troop Carrier command as a radio operator, being on the first troop carrier C-47 carrying Pathfinder paratroopers into France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Upon his discharge, Harold returned to Mahaska where with his brother, Harry, they operated the Coonrod Hardware until 1951 when he was appointed Mahaska Postmaster, serving in that office until retiring February 1980.
On August 29, 1942 Harold was united in marriage to Virginia B. Waltman and to this union two sons, Monte and Joel , were born. Upon the death of Virginia in 1954, with the help of Adolph and Pansy Waltman and Beulah Coonrod, Harold raised his two sons.
Harold was a charter member of Jayhusker American Legion Post #377 in Mahaska serving as adjutant from 1951 to 1980. He also served as Secretary and a member of the Mahaska City Council for several years. Harold was united in marriage in 1985 to Doris G. Schwab of Alexandria, Nebraska and moved to Seward, Nebraska.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Beulah Coonrod, his brother Harry and his wives, Virginia and Doris.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Monte Coonrod,; Joel and Brenda Coonrod; his grandchildren and spouses, Christy and Brian Syfie and Clint Coonrod; Natasha and Dr. Ben Anderson; Alisha and Brad Lavicky; a step grandson, Andrew Schwab; great grand children, Whitney, Christopher, Kyle, Jackson, Izayha and Zakaryah; three step great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; three step great great grandchildren; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Allen and Penny Schwab; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Dyar; nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
