JOHN POORE

Former Amherst resident John William Poore, 79, of Florida and Elyria, died September 19 at his home in Elyria. He was dead on arrival at Elyria Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Waco, Texas, October 4, 1903, and prior moving to Holiday, Florida 12 years ago, he lived in Amherst for 35 years.

Poore, a millwright, worked at U.S. Steel Lorain Works for 38 years, retiring 1968.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma [nee Wilson]; sons Clarence of Elyria, and George and Frank, both of Amherst; daughters Mrs. Doris Reynolds of Elyria, and Mrs. Bill [Joyce] Westmoland of Amherst; step-son William Ray Callahan of Lorain; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-children; brothers Paul Poore of Holiday, and James Poore of Tucson, Arizona; and sisters Mrs. Clarice Chandler of Decatur, Ga., and Mrs. Ruby Lee McCleskey of Woodstock, Ga. His first wife of 47 years, Alice, died in 1972.

Rites were held at the Hempel Funeral Home September 22. The Rev. Dr. Don Engram, pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Elyria, officiated. Burial was in Crownhill Cemetery.
