As per "American Lutheran Biographies" by Jens Christian Roseland (1890), Rev. G.C.F. Haas was born in Philadelphia on 5 May, 1854, the son of parochial school educator and church organist John C. Haas. He attended the university of Pennsylvania and the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. After first working as assistant to Pastor Raegener at St. Mark's in New York City, he assumed full charge of the church in 1882. In 1883, he married Anna S. Hansen.
In 1904, Rev. Haas' wife and daughter Gertrude were among the over 1,000 victims of the General Slocum disaster in New York City.
