German Royalty. His titles were Count Palatine of Neuburg ad Donau, Duke of Jülich and Berg. Patron of the Arts, he commissioned Peter Paul Rubens to paint, among other works, the altarpiece for the high altar of the Jesuit Church in Neuburg on the Danube, '"The Great Last Judgement,'' (Rubens' largest painting) which today is on view in the Alte Pinkothek. In 1613, he married Duchess Magdalene of Bavaria.
