German Royalty. His titles were Duke Palatine of Neuburg/Danube, Duke of Jülich and Berg, and Duke of Oberpfalz and Cham. In 1691, after her first wife Maria Anna Josepha, Archduchess of Austria died, he married Anna Maria Luisa De' Medici, daughter of the Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany. He was very popular in Jülich-Berg, where he erected impressive buildings including the "Castle of Bensberg" and led a lavish court which gave work to many artists and artisans. In Düsseldorf, the "Jan-Willem Platz" is named after him.
