From the Toledo Blade: June 19, 1936:
Youth Killed in Accidental Gun Discharge /// Darrell Miller Victim of Mishap on Hunting Trip /
Darrell Miller, 18, of 815 Sheridan st., was shot fatally early last night when a rifle he was disassembling at the foot of Blucher st, near Swan creek, was discharged accidentally. He died in County hospital two hours later.
The youth, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Miller, was wounded while he and two companions, Primo Ceravola,16, and his brother, Vincent, 12, of 614 Avondale ave, were on a bird hunting expedition in a field near the foot of Blucher st.
In a statement to detectives, Primo said he had told Darrell to hide the rifle, which was a take-down model and could be carried in a small box, as he had seen a watchman approaching and feared they might get into trouble for shooting the guns.
Vincent Ceravolo told police that the rifle was discharged as Darrell placed it in the box. The charge struck the youth beneath the right eye. Primo realized at once the seriousness of this friend's injury and ran to a nearby house to phone police, who took the boy to the hospital.
At the Safety building, Primo demonstrated to police how the weapon could be fired even with the stock removed. He said he and Darrell often went off on shooting expeditions and that they had been friends for five years. Both of the boys were released after making statements.
Coroner William Shapiro, who said he will hold an inquest Monday, returned a tenative verdict of accidental death.
Besides his parents, Darrell is survived by brothers, Glen, 32; Donald, 15, and Kenneth, 7.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the Foth Mortuary. followed by burial in Toledo Memorial Park cemetery.
