William Sakari Michaelson was born in Finland, where he married his wife Ida Fredrika Michaelson (nee Simula).
They later immigrated to the U.S. and lived in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. William's name was originally Zachris Wilhelm Maihkila, but was later changed to a more Americanized form after immigrating.
Ida died in 1937, leaving William a widower. He was also a victim of a mining accident while working for the Ahmeek Mining Company (shown in photo) which left him blind for the rest of his life.
Ida and William had the following children:

Alma (who died at age 20)
Elmer (died at age 28)
Norman (died at 3 of dysentery)
