David Conrad Grondahl was born August 22, 1897, in LaGrande Township, the son of John and Martina (Halvorson) Grondahl. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trysil Lutheran Church. David grew up in the Holmes City area and did construction work and was employed by the Soo Line Railroad. He served his country during World War I with the United States Army. David was united in marriage to Viola Carlson on November 7, 1923 at Glenwood, Minnesota and to this union two daughters were born. in 1954, the family moved to St. James, Minnesota, where he was employed by the Downs Packing Plant for five years. Mr. Grondahl was a member of First Lutheran Church of Alexandria, American Legion Post No. 87 and Runestone Barracks No. 2719.
David died at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home on December 7, 1987, where he has been a resident. He is survived by his wife, Viola of Alexandria; one daughter, Mrs. James (Marlys) Riihl of Rocktop, Illinois; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dolores Grondahl, June 18, 1986, parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services were held December 11, 19878 at the First Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Minnesota with Rev. Ronald Otterson and Rev. Loren Spaulding officiating. Pallbearers were Delmore Gustafson, Larry Crouse, David Fahlin, Carroll Henning, Arthur Peterson and Ronald Berneking. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota. Services directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.
