George E. "Ed" Prather, 74, of 2241 Seneca Drive died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

He was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Richmond, Ky., the son of Leslie and Nellie Stocker Prather. He was a correctional lieutenant at the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange, Ky., until he retired in 1997. He drove a tractor for the Mayflower agent from August 1960 until December 1974. He attended Milton United Methodist Church, Milton, Ky. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having earned the Silver Star and a Purple Heart among other medals. He was a member of the American Legion, Jefferson Post 9; the Disabled American Veterans; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1969.

Surviving are his wife, Mae J. Copestick Prather; two daughters, Cynthia Lowry of Houghton, La., and Betty Lou McQueary of Madison; one son, George E. Prather Jr. of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Irene Hager of Nicholasville, Ky., and Anna Mae Crouch of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernon Prather and Leslie Prather Jr.; and one son, Scott Allen Prather, in February 1964.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Vail-Holt Funeral Home Madison Chapel, with burial in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. Monday until the service.

The American Legion, Jefferson Post 9, Honor Guard will conduct military graveside services.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Disabled Veterans of America. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
