Ellen was the ninth child of John and Margaret Van Dyke of rural Toledo, Illinois. She came to Effingham in 1880, the year she married Benton Fortney and remained for 45 years.

Obituary Effingham Daily-March 5, 1925
Mrs. Ella Fortney,age 67, died Monday 7:15p.m. of complications of diseases after four weeks of sickness at her home in the east part of the city. She has been a resident of Effingham the past forty-five years. She leaves a son Charles and a daughter , Miss Lola both of this city. also a number of relatives and friends to mourn her death. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon 3 o'clock from the residence. The deceased requested that there be no flowers at the funeral.
