Mela Morton Bowers, 100, a resident of Bristol Nursing Home, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999. She was a native of Sullivan County, a retired seamstress with Nickels Manufacturing Co. and a former teacher with the Sullivan County school system, teaching at Friendship, Rosedale, Hickory, Tree and Mount Holston schools in Sullivan County. She was a member of Central Holston Christian Church, where she taught and served in many ministries of the church. She was the widow of Joe L. Bowers. Survivors include a brother, Carmack Morton of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge. BRISTOL HERALD-COURIER, 8 Feb. 1999.

Funeral services for Mela Morton Bowers will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Central Christian Church with Wayne Emery and Sid Tilley officiating. Burial will be in Shipley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ted Morton, Stanley Bowers, Bob Boughers, Darryl Morton, Richard Morton, Tony Myers and Larry Smithson. Honorary pallbearers will he remaining nephews. Those desiring may make memorials to Central Holston Christian Church. A special thank you to the staff of Bristol Nursing Home. Mrs, Bowers did not have children of her own but was mother to numerous children in family, church and community. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday in Weaver Funeral Home.
